I bought quite a cheap starter pack from k mart. it is 12 volt, has jump leads and I think says 600 amps.
Can I start the 13 hp diesel boat engine with it, if the battery is flat, and what terminal do i connect (it says to only connect the positive ones)?
thanks
I've never tried you particular jump pack, but I've attempted to start diesel sail boat engines many times. Even with a large 500 AMP Charger, with boost capacity several times the 600amp claimed by your pack. I still had to wait for the charger to run for several hours before the engine would crank. I'd done this on Volvo's, Perkins, Westerbeke, and Yanmar engines. So, I'm thinking the starter load is just to high, but I could be wrong. P.S. I loaned a really nice charger to another mechanic. He brought it back "fried" in just a few minutes.

i want buy a diesel engine fishing boat . but i dont which model is best for fishing boat ? please say which model is better and how can i see its picture and information?
the latest diesel is the new yamaha 4 cylinder engine. check the web sites for marine engines. a good start is 'marine engines .com ' diesels are heavier than gasoline so the boat will be stonger construction. the new yamaha is aboout 20,000 dollars and with the stronger hull, your cost will be higher than gas but you will save on fuel cost. diesel will give you more miles per gallon.
I am looking at buying an old 38ft sailboat with a diesel engine that needs replacing. What is an estimate cost to replace the old engine and have a new engine installed? Assuming the new engine will be something like a 35hp yanmar deisle installed by a yanmar dealer (dealer says they have to look at everything before they quote me - but I don't want to buy the boat until I have an estimate). Any ballpark figures based on experience? thanks!
I've installed quite a few over the years and charged for some, including a Yanmar, smaller than the 35hp, in a thirty foot sloop. (I think it was an 18hp).
Though it's not really the size of the unit that affects the final bill. It is things like the state the boat is in; what condition the bearers, exhaust system, electrics and fuel tank are in; whether it is a petrol-to-diesel change; air-cooled to water-cooled change etc. All these add some extra time. So would be more.
The best comparison from my personal experience is with a complete re-install, which I did with a 20hp Bukh, in order that the engine compartment could be given a complete clean-up and paint, and the unit given new mounts, coupling, a sump-pump and a thorough service etc - all of that was done by the boat owner while the unit was removed.
Apart from the fact that, being a thoroughbred marine diesel this was extremely heavy, there was no 'additional' work here at all. Engine out / engine back in, then just hook-up and align everything, and test.
That was £2,000. (UK) That's $3,637 at today's rate [May 8th 2010]
Dealers usually charge more (per hour) but have much less work to do obtaining all the necessary bits and pieces as they keep them in stock.

Could you please help me (or direct me to the right person) regarding the above diesel engines. I have recently purchased a boat fitted with 2-inboard 8061SRM's fitted and require the spec for idle speed and adjustment screw location.
Your help / advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you.
hi - have done this - with no REAL sucess! are waiting to hear back from Fiat / Iveco and several other sites, but thought I'd check this as well!
Just type the model no. into a search engine and take your pick of the answers.
I would like to make a educated gees but all I know is combustion not compression/diesel engines.
Can't figure it out. 2 engines that push at least 10 knots
The boat is V hull house boat made for sea.
Ways around 8 ton.
What would be the beast engein's for this boat.
And the engine's have to run under water! Snorkel of course.
Detroit, cummins, cat, are all very reliable engines and you can get them in a variety of sizes and outputs

MAN U-boat diesel engine Start up · Cars and Trucks
Starting up probably’s worlds only running MAN WW1 U-boat diesel engine, build in 1917! To start the egine a pressure of 100 Atm in needed for the fuel injection system and a large volume of air at 20 Atm to set the six cilinders in motion, once started the egine’s own compressor takes over the high pressure fuel injection. See/read more details in the movie “MAN 1917 Running”
@somethinextra As you know, the casualty rate in U-boats in both wars was astounding. Depending how long he’d been doing it, I imagine your father in ’44 was either a scared kid or a bitter and cynical old-timer kid. Without going back and looking up dates, I think it’s fair to say that in ’44 U-boat operations were pointless; and I’m sorry that your father died in such a wasted effort.
