Best Boat Engine

I expect there are new products out there that would best fit this answer, but my budget is minimal, so I will be buying used. It's my understanding that pontoon boats, in particular those with a center pontoon, are a good option.

We are considering a deck boat with a I/O engine and also an outboard engine. Which engine is best?

Outboards are available all the way to 350hp, so i/o or outboard will match any application you have. I would go outboard, Yamaha to be exact. They are very reliable. I/Os have similar characteristics as outboards concerning handling but are harder to get at and may be more costly to maintain even if just from a labor standpoint. You also get more room in the boat with o/b power.

If it is an outboard, put a big plastic tub under the propellor and fill it with water. Set the steering so that the exhaust drives the water around the tub, don't aim it square at the side, and avoid the propellor hitting the side if intending to pop it into gear for a short burst. Aim cooling water out-jet so as to fall back into tub so as not to make a flood and if running for long periods, take care to avoid overheating, as 'recycled' water will heat up quite quickly. (Tip: Just before switching off, put a very small amount of washing-up liquid in the water - it will clean lots of dirt and mud out of the cooling lines.)

If it is an inboard, affix a hose from the mains water supply into the engine intake, ensure the intake seacock is open, remove any items you do not want to get wet from the area near to the outlet (often the exhaust) turn on the water FIRST, to a good flow, but not so hard that it drives the hose out, and start it up. It will make a flood. How you contain this is up to you! Be sure to keep a close eye on the water hose and do not allow it to become disconnected.

Only turn off the hose AFTER switching off the engine. And soon after.

try any of the dealers in your area, there starving right now! and will probabally take a loss on new old stock just to get it off there floor, serious! now is the time to strike if you want a good deal on a new motor. and the reason manufactures dont list price is that dealers and location vary, I actually seen a 05 old stock brand new 18ft Sea Swerl for $5500 no bull!!
