4 Engine Boat

I was told I have a cracked engine block from trying to re-start my Volvo Penta 4.3 boat motor after I had turned it off while in forward gear.I was not running full speed maybe 10 miles per hour.I was told I had sucked water into the motor and by trying to re-start I ruined the starter teeth,I tried to re-start 5 or six times.I was told this is what cracked the engine block.Is this possible and what does it take to crack the block?

Generally engine blocks crack from the water in the coolant passages freezing. boats are at a higher risk because they dint run antifreeze.

I guess it is possible to have a starter crack a block (at least where it mounts to it) from binding on the flywheel. But Ive never seen or heard of it happening.

When you say you sucked water into the motor. Where and how?

try any of the dealers in your area, there starving right now! and will probabally take a loss on new old stock just to get it off there floor, serious! now is the time to strike if you want a good deal on a new motor. and the reason manufactures dont list price is that dealers and location vary, I actually seen a 05 old stock brand new 18ft Sea Swerl for $5500 no bull!!

lots of money and you will have to re-engineer the installation also be aware that you are most likely going to affect the safe operation of the boat by making it faster than what it was designed to go and also by adding a lot of weight to the stern good luck

I am looking at getting a '98 Mercury 25hp 4 stroke. I took off the top and looked inside and the engine looks nice and clean. Are there any known problems to watch out for? How much is the engine worth with low hours?

The first time I saw one was at service school, either 92 or 93. The earliest I can remember them being for sale in Canada was 1996, we ordered one for a customer who had to have the latest of everything, I think we waited most of the summer for delivery (it was a 15hp), and my dad said it sounded like a duck crapping on a tin plate! Seems to me that the 40 4/s was introduced first in Belgium, maybe a couple of years before north america.

Everyone is going to say "that's not a Merc, it's a Yamaha painted black!" Fact is Merc did buy shortblocks from Yamaha in the early years, but every thing else was Mercury. Much the same as their I/Os are blocks from GM, and some of the small 4 stroke blocks are Tohatsu.

The only recurring problem i can recall was with the fuel enrichment system(choke). The early ones never worked right, so they developed a new system, sometime in the late 90s.

If this motor has compression above 120 psi, starts easily, and has no funny noises, it's probably worth $500-800. If the compression is below 120, pass on it. As soon as you get it , have the valves adjusted, this should be done about every 250 hrs, and everybody "forgets".

In referring to the term "stroke", I mean as in a 2 stroke or 4 stroke boat engine.

Stroke in referring to internal combustion engines, refers to the number of cycles to intake/fire/exhaust...
In the Otto cycle (4 stroke cycle) there are 4 complete strokes to each cycle; intake, compression, power, exhaust.
In the 2 stroke cycle engine, there are only 2 complete strokes to each cycle with intake/exhaust being combined at bdc of the power stroke.
