I have to find the right foam to use for makeing cushions for a seating area in the flybridge of my boat. I have read a little about Qualux Foam. Also I need a foam for inside couch cushions ..perhaps the same foam, but perhaps not neccessarrily quite as resilliant. THANKS!

Any closed cell foam will work on the flybridge. Consult your local trimmer on what brand names they recommend. Check for anti-fungus and anti-shrink properties. Keep in mind that closed cell foam will shrink in time, depends on how the foam is cut. For the interior cushions you can use a regular open cell foam with a density of around 45. 4" thick for seating and 3" for backrests. One tip to prevent fungus growth, shrinking and ease of cover installation is to cover the cushions in plastic. I've use the tall larger garment bags from dry cleaners. It will save your cushions.

I just can’t seem to stretch the covers over the foam, how do the professionals do it? Anyone know the trade secrete?

The vaccum thing is good, if it is collapsible, but for closed cell foam, you need to just bend the foam in half to slip it into the sleeve.

If this is something you do regularly, you might want to slip the foam into sleeves before they finish drying fully. Boat cushions shouldnt have much of a problem with mildewing, so you wont have stink to worry about by not completely drying the sleeves. You can let the cushions finish drying in the sun.

Well, you can... but they each time you do that, it eats away at the UV protection, and eventually just makes matters worse.
The trick here, is not to use any soap or chemicals, or at least to use only very mild soap on everything regarding your boat. Harsh detergents, commercial cleaners - while they all make the immediate job easier - but they all do damage.
I can show you some 40 year old boats whose original paint, (gelcoat) woodwork, cushions, windows, hatches, etc. all look like it came out of the show room yesterday... Reason? None of it has ever been touched by soap, detergent, or cleaners.
Any good professional boat or auto painter will tell you - if you want the finish to look like new 10 years or more from now... to wash it often, but not to wash it with soap - as soap will slowly remove all the protective finish. Same is true with vinyl (which is a form of plastic) cushions.

I need to make some internal covers for my boat cushions/beds.
these are approx 7 ft in length.

I have the foam which is in good condition so just need to make the covers. what sort of fabric should i use/avoid. Not bothered about it being waterproof as its a dry area..
any links to fabric shops in uk welcomed
