Air Cushion Boat

boat using large fans to push air under it lifting it above water on a cushion of air?

Hovercraft, or air-cushion vehicle (ACV), is a vehicle or craft that can be supported by a cushion of air ejected downwards against a surface close below it, and can in principle travel over any relatively smooth surface, such as gently sloping land, water, or marshland, while having no substantial contact with it

Physics Question: Why is a hovercraft faster than a boat?

"Hovercraft, which move over water on a cushion of air, can acheive greater speeds than ordinary boats. Explain how this is possible." is the question we have to answer for our physics class....

It's because there's no fluid friction over a hovercracft, right? Because it's not partially in water like a regular boat is, it's floating over the water. Right?

a boat has to push against water, the hovercraft is pushing against air and air is less dense then water

What Is The Rough Speed Of These Boats:?

1) Landing Craft Air Cushion
2) RIB
3) Combat Support Boat
4) Harbour Tugboat
5) Fast Ferry
6) Car Ferry
7) Heavy Lift Ship
8) Gantry Crane (not a boat I know)
9) Passenger Hovercraft
10) Severn Class Lifeboat
11) Water Taxi
12) Sailing Boat (I know it depends on wind but roughly on a calm day)
13) Logistic Ramped Landing Craft
14) MK 6 Assault Boat

If anyone knows any of them or some of them please could you answer in MPH or Knots. Thank you, all answers would be gratefully accepted.

2 a 14 ft rib with a 50-35knots
10 severn class lifeboat about 15 knots
11 water taxi about 10 knots
12 sailboat 5 knots of wind 22 foot boat -2.5 knots

Purpose Built Hover-plane?

I am a Mechanical Engineer at a Light Hovercraft Company (about 5 years now). I’ve been wondering if there has ever been a hover-plane? Basically like a float-plane or flying boat, expect using principals of a Hovercraft instead of a boat?

There are several hovercraft which can fly in ground affect.
See http://www.hovercraft.com/content/index. php?main_page=index&cPath=2 for an example

However I have not heard of anyone trying to make a “hover-plane”? Does anyone know of any?

It would have to be a purpose built because it would be far too difficult to modify an existing plane such as a C-172. However a hover-plane would have many benefits over a float plane.

The plane would be able to land on many more surfaces without the need for heavy landing gear.
Ice, Mud, Water, Grass, Gravel, Tidal Flats even pavement. Although pavement would wear down the skirts quickly so grass landings would be much better than pavement.

It would make an excellent bush plane, being able to land on very rough and en-even ground and could pass over logs, rocks and stumps up to 12” in diameter (depending on cushion height).

Hovercraft are already light-weight because they are essentially flying machines. Except they only fly at 12” AGL. So weight should not be an issue.

The “air-cushion” would act as a shock-absorber (if properly designed and built) enabling it to handle rougher landings on all terrain.

When on cushion, hovercraft have very little skirt drag (unlike floats) enabling shorter take-off. (unless skirt drag was present from thick grass or very choppy water).

The concept, although it has its fair share of obstacles, seems very sound. Does anyone know where this has been tried? Any input? ….. Any investors? ;)
For those who don't know what a hovercraft is. Forget the word "hover" and leave helicopters out... Fatman Nailed it with "aircraft with hovercraft landing gear". Now can you, Fatman, or anyone else lead me to info on such "hovercraft landing gear" setup?? And yes, crosswinds would pose a problem but you could land in a crab as with castering landing gear.

It has been done, a hovercraft as landing gear. Problem is when crosswinds tend to make the aircraft top over; hovercraft don't do well in that situation.

Physics-A car (mass = 1050 kg) is traveling at 27.0 m/s when it collides head-on with a sport utility vehicle?

1)A car (mass = 1050 kg) is traveling at 27.0 m/s when it collides head-on with a sport utility vehicle (mass = 2340 kg) traveling in the opposite direction. In the collision, the two vehicles come to a halt. At what speed was the sport utility vehicle traveling?

2)Batman (mass = 95.0 kg) jumps straight down from a bridge into a boat (mass = 534 kg) in which a criminal is fleeing. The velocity of the boat is initially +14.5 m/s. What is the velocity of the boat after Batman lands in it?

3)Two people are standing on a 3.32-m-long platform, one at each end. The platform floats parallel to the ground on a cushion of air, like a hovercraft. The two people, the platform and a 5.85-kg ball are all initially at rest. One person throws the 5.85-kg ball to the other, who catches it. The ball travels nearly horizontally. Excluding the ball, the total mass of the platform and people is 112 kg. Because of the throw, this 112-kg mass recoils. How far does the platform move before coming to rest again?

1) m1v1=m2v2
1050x27=2340 x v2
v2=28350/2340=12.12m/s
