Need To Know What You Use To Protect A Canvas Cover For Our Four Winns Boat?

We have a 1985 Four Winns Cuddy Cabin Boat. We need to treat the cover, so that it's protected against the elements. Does anyone know what type of protectant you would use to spray on there to protect it from the elements, such as, sun, snow, etc? Thanks in advance!

If it is a well made boat cover, it shouldn't require any additional work on it unless it has aged for quite a while. Make sure you put pole supports to keep water from pooling on your cover and overstretching your boat cover.

If I have a boat cover that is over 3 years, I'll buy a can or two of scotch guard and spray it down with a decent coat. Other than that, nothing else.

Four Winns jet boat, OMC 115 Turbojet boat motor rebuild question ?

Had a major overheat. Top right cylinder has very low compression, 15LB, All others at 115. Pulled the head cover, looks like the rings came off and caused a hundred or so pits on the piston as well as inside the head cover, can not see cylinder walls yet. My questions is could just the one piston be replaced? Could just that one cylinder be bored if it is also damaged?
Called local marina {Columbus, Oh} they said sounds like a total rebiuild needed, 2500.00 for the motor, 1000.00 for parts, rebuild carbs and labor. 3500.00 total, Boats in great condition. These boats if running and look decent are worth only about 3000.00 or less.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions

The "major" overheat bothers me and your mechanic. The problem is you are looking at the first piston than completely failed. The rest were moments behind. The labor is about 3 hours different between one cylinder and all of them.- Even less if re-bored. Then the heads are warped and that silver looking stuff on all the valves is melted aluminum from some where.

No shop in it's right mind will do a single hole, as when the rest of them fail- they will be the rotten scoundrels who ruined your motor.

Steam out of valve cover vent on 4.3L Merc?

I had the intake manifold replaced on my 2005 Four Winns with a 4.3L Merc Inboard boat. It starts fine, idles fine and works fine at trawling speed. I took the boat back today and had the timing set properly. It still has a knock in it at higher rpms. The spark plugs are all still normal, compression is still 120 psi in each cylinder and there is still no water in the oil. It has steam coming out of the valve cover vent on starboard side only. Does anyone know what could cause that?
Thanks for the responses. Yes the valve cover vents have a hose that runs to the flame arrester. It's noticable consistently but not billowing. I had the intake replaced because I failed to take out the pipe plug in the manifold this winter - my bad. It ran fine up to stalling from water getting in. I cleaned it out and I have continually checked the oil. no water in it. It's like new. As far as the knocking goes, I did put high octane fuel in the boat. Is it only supposed to be regular only?

its probably not steam, it's oil smoke and small amounts are normal from the valve cover vent. In a car this is captured and via the PCV system and reburnt, in a boat depending on the year, its either captured by a hose from the vent and routed to the flame arrester / intake or on older boats it was just released via the vent.

The hose should go from the vent to the little pipe on the side of the arrestor (if carburated) as seen here:

it should not be billowing out though, just a little bit, enough to see though. If its steam, water got in somewhere and would either be enough to notice in the oil or a little and would burn off relatively quickly.

as far as still knocking at high speed, why was the intake replaced? are there other issues? check the cooling system, if your running on the hot side you could be getting pre-ignition or detonation. timing is a big factor, are you sure that was done correctly? also is the gas fresh and of the recommended octane rating?

or is it a mechanical knock, a rod or misadjusted rocker arm?

good luck!

2011 Four Winns SL262

The “SL” in the SL 262 stands for Sport Luxury and this boat covers those two bases well. When you step aboard the first thing you notice is the rich-looking tan upholstery and the solid-looking, wide custom-made seats – not seats that are flimsy, off-the-shelf and used by a dozen builders. This is not a rinky-dink, stamp-them-out-100-at-a-time bow rider. This is a substantial boat. That classy and elegant theme is carried through to the helm which has a real wood-grain steering wheel
