Dinghy Boat Cover

Doesn't the US Navy have incredibly advanced and accurate long range missiles that can basically cover the entire million square mile region with just one ship? And you know those little dinghy boats the pirates use are not traveling out to open sea by themselves; they have refueling ships somewhere just acting as sitting ducks.

The problem is that we can't just bomb them. They have hostages that we want to avoid killing. What the Navy SEALs did was great, but I don't know if they can do that again. You have to be careful because you want to get the pirates, but can't let them kill the hostage, and you can't give in to their demands.

What I think we should do is pay them the ransom, track them to shore and then totally annihilate them by dropping a beacon near them and then get our air force to bomb them off the face of this earth.

Another possible solution would be to start sending "suicide-bomber" ships that look like merchant ships and appear to be a perfect target, but explode once the pirates get on. (Maybe they would do it remotly and have cameras to tell them when pirates had boarded.)

I would agree with you with waiting until they get to Somalia and nuking them, but there are many innocent people who live on the shore and were afraid of this happening (They had an interview on TV)

I have an intex seahawk 400 inflatable dinghy. this is a non powered boat and i want to know if i have to insure it for 3rd party cover if i use it on uk rivers?

Contemplate personal accident insurance - especially if a cruiser coming around a bend too fast doesn't see you !

Dinghy travels less than 10 knots, does not require registraton...and extremely unlikely you will damage another vessel...ie 3rd party is overkill.

Spend the $$ on a fluorescent orange top and a a good torch if you are planning to travel after dark - much better and safer if everyone can see you...

so i was searching the web for a reasonable dinghy to have to use once in a while to go fishing and what not or just to ride around in. but im not a man of money. i figured it would be cheaper to buy around 20 rolls of duct tape and some wood. if i constructed a wooden boat frame and used duct tape to cover it as a hull, would this be practical? would it last a while or fall apart after a use or 2? and also for a 2 person dinghy that is that is about 4' wide at the top,5' long, and 3' tall, would i need that much duct tape? thanks yallz!

a duck tape boat would be very temporary, maybe one or two uses. you will be better off building a simple boat. here are some inexpensive designs

We're looking to buy a new boat for our existing 20hp four stroke Honda outboard. This outboard is very light for a 4-stroke - it weighs 49kg. We're looking at the following boats:

1. Inflatible rubber dinghy, 310cm long (10 feet)
2. Inflatible again, but 340cm long (11 feet)
3. A 14-foot (430cm) inflatible

We also have a choice of either a) RIB (a rigid v-shaped hull made of fiberglass), or b) An inflatible hull, with aluminium panels covering the floor.

My question is, what kind of top speed can I expect in each case, using our 20hp outboard? If you have an opinion on the best kind of boat for such a smallish outboard, I'd like to hear it. The boats I listed above weigh around 50 to 60 kg each.

P.S. our current boat is a 500cm fiberglass boat with an 85hp 2-stroke yamaha and it does about 37mph flat out with two 80kg people on board (as measured with a GPS).

the 20 hp is too heavy, relatively for the 10 or 11' and the 14 is a softer hull, because it flexes `more it takes more to push it, but I'd think it would plane with a 20 hp honda..... at about 18 to 20 mph. I don't know your load but I wouldn't expect much more than that.

Edit. The 20 HP puts more weight aft of the CG/ and you and your passenger have to move as far forward as possible in the smaller boats. Even then when you apply power the bow will come up and it's hard to "push" the boat up on plane. Which can be done with the smaller 8 HP. But the top speed is not going to change much over that 18- to 20 mph range, even with a much larger engine.

Buckeye Lake has an average depth of about 6 feet with a maximum depth of about 14 feet. It has a relatively flat bottom without much underwater woody cover. It is a recreational lake of 2,847 acres located in a state park with many 4, 6 and 8 foot depths.

It seems to be more of a motor boat / fisherman type of place but due to it's closeness to home, I am wondering what is the largest sailboat (length, draft, interior space and anything that I didn't know to ask) that would be suitable for this type of lake, if any, sailing dinghies included.

Also, what concerns me is the depth of the water in the dry season of the summer time when boating would be most enjoyable for me in Ohio.

It's about 10 miles from home and the closest place to me for any boat.

I've been sailing a 17-foot keel boat on a local lake with similar characteristic and under similar circumstances for the past 12 years or so. As with you, the majority of boaters are not sailboats, but pontoon boats or small fishing skiffs. However, that doesn't mean you can't enjoy a sailboat. Certainly there are some coves, I'm not going to venture into as far as a pontoon boat will, but most of the lake is still open to me. It doesn't matter if there is 1 foot under your keel, or 100, to enjoy the lake as long as your boat floats. Towards the end of the summer, there is usually less than 6 inches of water under the boat when I pull into the dock, and in some really low years, the keel has even plowed through a bit of silt to get back in. So what?

One of the things that helps me sail with confidence is that it is a swing keel boat. so I know that if I get stuck or the water goes down, all i need to do is crank up the keel and and I have an extra 2 feet to work with.

This boat is defiantly the best value I've ever had. I bought it used with a trailer for 2.5K over a decade ago, and have probably put less than $500 into it since then. However, it's still light enough to be towed with a mid size car and since it's a keel boat I can enjoy it when the water is too cold to even consider a dinghy. Unlike a dingy, it will sail 4 comfortable and on a few occasions I've had 6 on board, yet its as easy as a dingy to sail on my own. I store if for the winter and take it out and launch it in the spring with no thought in between. It's only about 20 minutes to rig, launch and be off sailing. I also feel confident to go out on calm days knowing I can just enjoy being on the water.

I think so many sailors miss so much because they get so paranoid about depth. From what you've said the bottom is unlikely to hurt most boats if you should run aground and with a swing keel or centerboard, its so easy to deal with that if you do. Even when I'm sailing in the Bahamas on a 33-foot boat, I'll often sail all day and rarely have water over 14-feet and find some beautiful shallow anchorages with nobody around. Sure there may only be 1.5 feet under the keel at low tide but as I said earlier, as long as the boat is floating, who cares how much depth is under it.

From what you've said a boat similar in size 17-19 feet might make sense for you, but you need to look more at what you'd like to do. If you will not have a slip, you need something easy transport rig and launch. Do you want to sleep out at night from time to time? - then you might want to go with something a little bigger. What's the towing capacity of your vehicle? Do you want to take other people out? These are all things to consider.

I had one year, that I tried a lake about an hour away, but I found the small lake similar to yours so convenient at only 20 minutes, that I used it so much more and have kept the boat there ever since.

There are a lot of used, small keelboats with trailers that are very affordible to purchase and will likely require little upkeep. I teach a sailing class that uses the above mentioned keelboat and several small lazer-sized dinghies. I'm thinking of getting rid of all the dinghies in part because they are less adaptable, more expensive in the long run, are not as appropriate in many weather conditions.

Buying a used keelboat is much like buying a used home. Don't get caught up in curb appeal. Don't get too worked up about the condition of the sails, paint jobs, old tires, or trailer lights not working. These are easy, cheap fixes. Structural damage to the boat, an engine that needs replacing or major trailer work however, can end up costing quite a bit.
