I have a classic car hobby, and i have been looking into changing careers to working with cars more. Not the mechanic aspect coz i think that would bore me everyday.... I have a neighbor that owns a custom upholstery shop, but is it hard to learn? i layed some carpet in my car, but that was it. I dont really know the skill to be able to fab up door panels and customize consoles. From scratch how long would it take to get some basics down and learn from there?
Thanks for input
It's not too terribly hard, but the equipment is the biggest expense. You'll need a regular sewing machine, a professional model. You'll also need a heavy use sewing machine, to go through thicker stuff. You can get clips on line. The material you can get at most sewing stores or upholstery shops. Thing is, if you don't know what you're doing, you can waste a lot of time and effort. So do some research first on the different ways to make the panels and stuff. It'll save you a lot of money, material, and frustration.

If you cut inside the plywood panels and remove triangle shaped sections it will create a tattice type frame of wood. Then staple felt to the wood (seams in the middle) and cover in fiberglass resin. Scrape of all excess resin to reduce weight of finished product. Now you may complete as desired and you will have a light, strong, water tight sub structure that will last the life of the boat.
