Cover For Boat

I'm currently making a boat cover for my sailboat. I'm using canvas because I have the material readily available to me. I'm concerned that my seams may leak. I plan on coating the cover with waterproofing spray to help shed water and leaves. The seams will be under stress and I'm looking for something other than the waterproofing in a can in which to seal the joined pieces and still afford protection from leaks. If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

Triple stitched, flat felled seams in canvas should not leak without any sealant. I have a cover from the below link for last NINE years in year-round sun & it is still in good condition. Cover was 6 or so years old at least when I got it but was winter stored under cover.

They may have example of the above. Also if the canvas is not UV protected you are wasting your time & energy.
Sell the canvas & buy the cover....

The cover is in pretty good shape, no holes or tears.

about $50.00. new covers start at about $50.00 at walmart for cheap covers, quality covers start around $100.00.

Our boat was stolen this morning from the boat mechanic shop. Our boat insurance covers the boat value but not the items in the boat. Approximate 800-900 bucks worth of stuff. Someone mentioned that my homeowners might cover it because it is personal property. Whatcha think my chances are. Are there any insurance agents out there?

Even if you put in a claim on your homeowners insurance and it does cover you, with a $500 deductible you would only be $300. It's not worth claiming.

Try to get shop to pay for your loss. If they don't then sue them in small claims court.

Don't put in a claim on your homeowners insurance. Save a claim for something big.

well custom made is the best but the things you have to think about are, do you want a cover that he can keep on the boat when he is towing it, a little exspensive or just a cover to keep on it at the house, cheaper. after you have that answered then you can look around your area and see whats offered.

Does anyone know of a great solution for getting mold off the rough underside of a canvas boat cover?

Try a non-chlorine bleach such as VIVID or CLOROX II in weak solution (1/8 cup/gal). Only when all else fails should you resort to chlorine bleach or mildew removers such as X-14 or TILEX. If you are going to use any of these harsh chemicals thoroughly wet the canvas with fresh water first. Again, try to use a weak solution, adding more bleach only as necessary to get results. As soon as the stains fade rinse with large quantities of fresh water. The bleach will probably hurt the waterproof finish of the fabric and it will also decrease the life of the polyester thread used in construction. Be sure to treat with a canvas water proofing.
Here’s a good trick to prevent mildew growth on canvas. Get a pump spray bottle and fill it with 50% white vinegar, 50% water. Whenever you wash down the boat (and after heavy rains) spray the canvas with this solution – especially the under side of dodgers and biminis. The vinegar won’t hurt the canvas but will prevent mildew growth.
