Canvas Cover

I have an older BassPro boat that came with a custom made heavy canvas cover. I beIieve it is made of cotton, but is the typical canvas material and not plastic. I would like to apply a water repellant to it. Also, when patching small holes and re-stitching seams that come loose, what kind of thread is available that is water, rot and UV resistant?

I would appreciate hearing from those who have indeed actually tried the products they wish to discuss.

Get ScotchGuard fabric protector. It sprays on and I use it every year to renew my cover. It does a great job. You can get it at the grocery store.

We have a 1985 Four Winns Cuddy Cabin Boat. We need to treat the cover, so that it's protected against the elements. Does anyone know what type of protectant you would use to spray on there to protect it from the elements, such as, sun, snow, etc? Thanks in advance!

If it is a well made boat cover, it shouldn't require any additional work on it unless it has aged for quite a while. Make sure you put pole supports to keep water from pooling on your cover and overstretching your boat cover.

If I have a boat cover that is over 3 years, I'll buy a can or two of scotch guard and spray it down with a decent coat. Other than that, nothing else.

i use liquid acrylic but i usually have to double coat areas some are opaque ..is there any thing i can do to get brighter colors that completely cover the canvas instead of always reworking the painting?

It really depends on what you are trying to do.. to get heavier, thicker, brighter opaque colours you will need to use heavy body acrylics. To get more transparencies that you can receive with liquid acrylics (depending on the quality) you can mix with a retarder medium or a flow release.

If you want to slow the drying rate of the paint to avoid constant reworking, use a retarder.

Does anyone know of a great solution for getting mold off the rough underside of a canvas boat cover?

Try a non-chlorine bleach such as VIVID or CLOROX II in weak solution (1/8 cup/gal). Only when all else fails should you resort to chlorine bleach or mildew removers such as X-14 or TILEX. If you are going to use any of these harsh chemicals thoroughly wet the canvas with fresh water first. Again, try to use a weak solution, adding more bleach only as necessary to get results. As soon as the stains fade rinse with large quantities of fresh water. The bleach will probably hurt the waterproof finish of the fabric and it will also decrease the life of the polyester thread used in construction. Be sure to treat with a canvas water proofing.
Here’s a good trick to prevent mildew growth on canvas. Get a pump spray bottle and fill it with 50% white vinegar, 50% water. Whenever you wash down the boat (and after heavy rains) spray the canvas with this solution – especially the under side of dodgers and biminis. The vinegar won’t hurt the canvas but will prevent mildew growth.
