How to repair a ripped boat tarp?

My tarp for the boat has about a 1 foot rip right down the middle. Does anyone have any ideas on what to use & how to repair this? Thanks in advance!!

you can try hand sewing it. you will need a large needle and probaly waxed linen thread.
a place that supplies harness makers,or a farm supply store would probably have what you need.

I'd like to build a Tarp Canopy for boat.?

Instead of tarping my boat for the winter which collapses sometimes in the snow/wind, I'm looking into those Canopy/Carports that I see people parking cars, RV's, and boats under. These things are like $500 though for a good one. Anyone have ideas on how to build your own using tarps and pipes? (boat is about 22' long)

I've used PVC pipe and cut the PVC into lengths and us the t connectors for angles, then I used a heavy gage tarp to cover the boat frame. the lengths of the PVC will vary dependent upon how wide the boat is at the areas you are installing the pipe. I then tie the frame to the boat and then pull the tarp down tight down over the frame work that was made. The tarp I used worked for a period of time until a branch fell on the tarp puncturing a whole in the tarp....

would putting a tarp under a boat keep it clean?

every year the bottom of my boat gets gathers muscles and barnacles and it take me forever to clean it off. i was thinking about just covering it with something so it will keep that stuff of. I just never seen this done, and yes i know about those boat lifts that take the boat out of the water but there like 20 grand.

I have used vising plastic run a rope around the boat and use cloths pins and add bleach in it clean it up.

Why does the top 16th to 1/4 inch of water trapped in my canvas boat tarp freeze at temps above freezing ?

I have a boat that is covered with a canvas tarp that has water trapped in it from a previous winter rain. That water freezes at temps just below 40 degrees fahrenheit actually around 37 to 40 degrees. There is water right next to this in a plastic bucket that does not freeze, and also standing water on the concrete etc... that will not freeze. The only things around that get frost or frozen is the water in the tarp, the top of my car, shingles on the roof and the grass. So why will the water in the canvas tarp freezes above 32 degrees but the water in the plastic wont. I don't understand this. thanks for any answers. The air is usually very still on these nights and the skies are cleara and crisp, this is at sea level I live right on the coast, (Santa Monica, CA ). Does the material that the air come into contact with help to lower the temp a bit just above the specific materials(canvas, grass, etc...)?

What you describe is very common when - as you say - the sky is clear at night and there is no wind.

During the night, the heat of any object directed toward the sky, will be lost by radiation. Yes, electromagnetic energy from your tarpaulin is moving away at the speed of light into space! And so is it for everything else that is under open sky.

There is actually no limit to how cold it can get. Meanwhile, the air around it is a very good insulator and doesn't cool down that fast; hence you can see frost on the bonnet of your car even if the air temperature is above freezing point.

That lost of heat energy during the night is the reason you often see morning fog. The air is much colder near the ground than above and that creates an inversion; the air doesn't rise as during daytime and the moisture near the ground condenses into tiny water droplets.

The reason you bucket of water doesn't freeze is that, while the surface looses heat, it sinks at the bottom when it reaches 39 F, which is the temperature at which water is the densest and heaviest. In the process, new and warmer water is then coming on the top of the bucket.

I need to dye/stain a canvas boat tarp .Help!?

Try painting it the desired color. This will be more water proof.

  • Can You Help Me Find My Perfect Duck Boat? | Field & Stream

Duck season closed this past weekend, which means I've already started thinking about next year's season. And one of my primary goals is the acquisition of a duck-hunting boat. Not a big boat, but a sneaky little boat to slip into isolated backwater areas I can't reach by walking. But here's the rub: I need one big enough for myself, the dog and decoys, but small enough so I can load and unload it by myself. I need it stable enough to get in and out in waders and let the dog load up, but easy enough to paddle a couple miles if need be.

There are many small waterfowling boats out there, as well as jon boats, canoes and kayaks. If it floats, someone somewhere is duck hunting out of it, but not all of them work well with dogs. I could, of course, just go buy a big duck boat with a blind, outboard and dog ladder and be done with it. But my money tree died last year and until the sapling starts producing more than quarters that won't happen.
