Boat Canvas Cover

I have an older BassPro boat that came with a custom made heavy canvas cover. I beIieve it is made of cotton, but is the typical canvas material and not plastic. I would like to apply a water repellant to it. Also, when patching small holes and re-stitching seams that come loose, what kind of thread is available that is water, rot and UV resistant?

I would appreciate hearing from those who have indeed actually tried the products they wish to discuss.

Get ScotchGuard fabric protector. It sprays on and I use it every year to renew my cover. It does a great job. You can get it at the grocery store.

Does anyone know of a great solution for getting mold off the rough underside of a canvas boat cover?

Try a non-chlorine bleach such as VIVID or CLOROX II in weak solution (1/8 cup/gal). Only when all else fails should you resort to chlorine bleach or mildew removers such as X-14 or TILEX. If you are going to use any of these harsh chemicals thoroughly wet the canvas with fresh water first. Again, try to use a weak solution, adding more bleach only as necessary to get results. As soon as the stains fade rinse with large quantities of fresh water. The bleach will probably hurt the waterproof finish of the fabric and it will also decrease the life of the polyester thread used in construction. Be sure to treat with a canvas water proofing.
Here’s a good trick to prevent mildew growth on canvas. Get a pump spray bottle and fill it with 50% white vinegar, 50% water. Whenever you wash down the boat (and after heavy rains) spray the canvas with this solution – especially the under side of dodgers and biminis. The vinegar won’t hurt the canvas but will prevent mildew growth.

I have a pressure washer. I dont know if it might hurt the canvas. What soap should I use? How can I make it waterproof again?

You can use a pressure washer, but depending on the condition of the canvas, it might damage the fabric.

Use a mild soap like Ivory Snow or Woolite. Simple green works well too.

After it has thoroughly dried, apply 303 High Tech fabric Guard or Aquatite according to the manufacturer's instructions

i am trying to make a waterproof canvas for a boat and dont know where to go to buy the material - if someone can point me in the right direction i would appreciate it very much
