Bass Boat Deck

I have a 1990 fiberglass bass boat. When I was putting it on my trailer this weekend, I noticed that the deck is separating from the hull up at the bow. I can lift up on the rubber/rope bumper strip and the get about a half inch of separation between the hull and the deck. This scares that heck out of me. How can I fix this myself?

On most boats of this design, the deck and the hull are made from two separate moldings, and glued together. Sounds to me like the glue that holds the two parts together is failing. This is probably NOT a huge problem, as it doesn't really effect the safety or integrity of the hull, but I would go talk to one of the mechanics at your local boat dealer's to see what he recommends to make repairs.

Hello, I too had a V hull boat with bad decking. I when to my local Home Depot and purchased 4 X 8 5/8" sheets of wolmanized plywood. I cut the plywood to fit. I also bought 2X4 composite decking to build the base supports under the decking if needed. Using coated deck screws, the platforms went together quite fast. After all decks are made, I sealed all decks with a high quality home outside deck sealer oil. I think i put on at least 4 coats. Even the wolmanized plywood soaked up the oil. The oil makes the water bead up. I even used the plywood to create benches. Just make sure that when you sand or cut wolmanized wood, always use a dust mask. I hope this helps.

I had bought a 30 yr. old Skeeter fixer upper. Some of the floor is rotted out. So I took out the rivets on the side thinking I could lift the deck off. It seems like something is still holding on. Any suggestions?

Some boats are sealed between the upper and lower halves. Take a flat bar and see if you can work it between the two halves. Slowly pry the halves apart and work your way around until you have the two parts seperated. Caution; when the two parts are seperated and you replace any fiberglass, make sure that the hull is braced in the same position as the original. If not, the hull will expand and the top will not fit properly. Make sure that the halves are not sealed together by a fiberglass mesh strip. If they are then you have to locate the seam from the inside and cut the two halves apart with a shallow cut off tool or what I found to work is a dremel tool with a cut off disc. I am redoing the decking of a 17' aluminum bassboat. It currently has carpeted 3/4" pressboard or OSB for the deckboards. I am wondering if I sould replace the deckboards with matching OSB or should I use plywood which I would think to be sturdier. What is the reasoning for using OSB over plywood? Is it a weight issue?

If you can afford Marine plywood, that should last you forever. Ask yourself, how long did the pressboard last before saying the Marine plywood is too costly. I don't think it's a weight issue, it's probably a cost issue.

I have recently purchased a 17' Alumacraft bass boat. I am installing all new carpeting and will be making some minor modifications to the deck. I am looking for the features others find to be the most valuable in the layout of their bass boats. Tell what you like about your deck layout the best and what features you have that you could not live without.
