Who can tell me how to cover a boat hull with copper sheating?

Hello,
I need to cover the hulls of a 24 m catamaran with copper foil or plate. I am wondering if someone can help with this rare technique: everyone uses chemical anti fouling these days and it seems that the old and best technique has disappeared...

There is a reason it is rare now. There are better and more cost effective alternatives, such as an epoxy coating with a large percentage of copper powder.

If boats 100 years or more ago had the chance they most certainly would have used it. Sheet copper is more likely to get stolen now days - try and keep copper water pipes at a building site!

Seriously - why would you nail copper to a lovely hull in this day and age? It was used because there was little alternative - not 'cos it was better, it was all there was!

How far can you cover in 24 hours...?

a) on a horse
b) in a horse-drawn carriage
c) on a sailing boat
d) in a car
e) on a plane
f) on a concorde jet
g) in an orbital spacecraft!

I only need these very very approximately... and if you guys are only sure of a couple or even one then that would be great because I need to know these pretty soon! Sorry and thanks! (also I KNOW you need to consider different factors blahblahblah but this is just very approximate?)

1. horse - about 30 - 50 kmph - four hours at a stretch then stop to water and rest 2 hours, then 4 hours - repeat 3 times. after this you or the horse will sleep.

2. Horse drawn carriage 30 km per hour - max 18 hours with change of horses and horse man.

3. Sailing boat - depending on wind speeds - 15 - 20 km per hour - but you can go on at a stretch.

4. car - average 70 km per hour - you can do 20 hours max in a day.

5. on a plane - average speed - just under mach 1 - about 600 km per hour -

6. concorde jet travels between mach 1.3 to mach 1.7 - i dont think it has the capacity to fly long hours due to tank size and speed.

7. orbital space craft - theoretically - slightly lesser than light speed - practically 30 mach.

I want you to do the rest of the calculations. good luck

If your neighbors tree falls on your boat. Whos insurance would cover it?

If your neighbors tree falls on your property and does damage . Whos insurance company should pay for damages. The tree looks healthy! but lots of missle toe and their is some rot looking stuff ih the stump, Also the wind did not bloww it over it just fell. It is a oak tree of some sort about 24 inches at base and it is in an irragated field??

Typically, it would be your policy that would pay the claim, then subrogate with the neighbor's carrier. Believe me, if your carrier is strong in customer service, this is the best way to go. Take your check and let them duke it out. Depending on how successful they are, your company will usually recover any deductible paid and refund it to you.

Framing a roof for a carport?

I am planning a rather large carport to build over this summer, which will cover my boat and provide two extra parking spots. Total size will be in the neighborhood of 26 feet wide by 30 feet long. I need some pointers on spacing the framing for the rafters - do I use 16 inch on center or can I go to 24 inch OC since it's a carport?

What the hell are these people talking about? 26 foot spans? I'd like to see you find a 26' long piece of lumber in any dimension. 2x12 rafters? Is he kidding? You don't use 2x12s for floor joists, for Christ's sake.

For a 26' long (deep) shed roof (sloped from front to back in a straight line), you'd need at least one beam running perpendicular to the rafters. If the roof decking is plywood and shingles, you would have to use 2x10s to span 13'. For a lathe and metal roof, you would use 2x8s, both on 16" centers. No matter what size lumber you are using, it will all sag over a 13' span. The lumber will sag under its own weight.

If you put in two beams, you're only spanning about 8 1/2 feet; you can use 2x6s on 16" or 2x8s on 24". If you want a span with no beams (and their accompanying columns), you can use 8" TGIs. It's a wood I beam with a 2x3 on top and bottom and OSB in the center. House builders use them in 10" sizes for floor joists to span over 20' without support. They are really lightweight and two people can handle one over 20' long. I've used them on a gable roof to allow for open attic space with no braces over a large 2-car garage.

One way to minimize sagging is to use X bracing. There are metal braces that you nail to the top of one rafter and the bottom of the next one. You can also use 2x4s for this, cut on a bevel. X braces unify the roof by tying rafters together into groups of three. (for every rafter, there is one on either side of it that will have to sag with it in order for it to sag)

Oh, yea, I forgot about snow loads in your area. If you go with the 13' span and have a potential for several inches of snow, go up to 2x10s. Similarly, go up one size for the 8 1/2' span, too.

Does anyone want to make a movie/novel cover for me?

I need a novel cover made from my novel. I know theres a lot of creative pple with talent out there!! the reason i say movie/novel is because i was hoping that the cover would look similar to a movie cover with all the main characters on it. The novel is called : Beyond the Ripples. its a romance/drama/thriller
anywhooo i appriciate it very much :)

character descriptions:

the main main characters:
Jamison: male ages 18-22 (is 19 in the book). tall lean muscles bright blue eyes, dark messy hair (brown or black idc, w/e looks good and not too long but not short short). very chiseled jawlineand high cheek bones. oliveish complextion but more french colored. he needs a certain victorian look like hes born in 1824 (crucial).
Ariel: female ages 17-20 (is 18 in the book). 5'7''-5'9''. slim but curvy not paris hilton slim but marilyin monroe curvy. long rich chocolate hair. preferably in curls or waves down to her waist. emerald green eyes that stand out (crucial)!! full lips but not angelina jolie. thick lashes. sophisticated style, she was born with money. (preferably if she was in a red dress) not pale skinned but creamy peach, american.

main characters:
anastasia: female ages 26-29 (28 in the book). long wavy red hair, strawberry blonde. brown or green eyes idc, w/e looks good. average build with more hips and hooters cuz she has a kid. pale skin.

Gabriel: (yay finally the bad guy) male ages 24-29 (25 in the book). average build , thin face but good looking. hazel or brown eyes. blonde or dirty blond hair. needs to have that certain villainy that can look either 1824 or 2009... challenge hehe

Henry: male ages 26-33 (30 in the book) (brothers with jamison and married to anastasia if that helps) dark hair like jamison but greyish green eyes (crucial) and a sharp nose. he needs to look youngish but you can tell hes in his 30's or close to it. hes from 1824 as well.

Rosa: (the bad girl yay!!) female ages 17-21(18 in the book). latino background. brown hair, brown eyes. not very pretty but not ugly. smuggish looking nose. slender build, the closest resemblence i had in mind was vanessa hudgens. she is from 1824 but can look 2009 as well.

kool and the background picture theme is a ripple in water or an old victorian house (garden setting by the water) or an old row boat. NOTE i said theme!! so that means anything along those lines so be open minded

here are the relations: jamison and ariel are lovers. anastasia and henry are husband/wife with a kid( they love ea/other a lot). gabriel is the male villain and rosa is the female villain. i hope that helped with arrangments and stuff

the more i get to choose from the better!!! if i truely like your cover i will have my professionals take a look at it. :) thanksss
i dont have the money for professional designers and by 'my professionals' i meant my novel agent. i wanted to bring a different prospective to my book by my possible audiences not all professional and not to my point.

"the more i get to choose from the better!!! if i truely like your cover i will have my professionals take a look at it. :) thanksss"

You've got to be kidding. If you're at all professional you'll know that graphic designers and artists get paid quite a lot of money for that work. To not only ask someone to do it for free, but to ask them to make several mock ups is just rude.
If you want help with something it's ok to ask but don't do it under false pretenses. "my professionals" indeed.

  • Any pix of boat cover supports? Dual console - The Hull Truth ...

Sorry no pics mine is wrapped up, I use 2" schedule 40 PVC pipe. My trailer has guide post that the PVC slides over then comes back across to the center of the deck connecting to a T. Then it runs up to the windshield and is supported by a post to the deck. Don't let the PVC rest on the windshield. In the bow area is a 1-1/2" PVC tripod A, T looking thing that is self supported. Sorry, no pics. I am better at building things than figuring out computers. I have a 17' Scout Dual Console and wanted a method to prevent pooling and, since I trailer my boat, keep it simple as well. I did 3 things which worked well for the cover, only 2 that involve the pooling issue. I made a simple stand...
