This is from Page 226, #24 of Fundamentals of Technical Mathematics (2nd edition): Solve this system for I1, I2, and I3.
A sailboat leaves a harbor at 0600 hours (6 a.m.) and motors under power with no wind. At 0800 hours (8 a.m.) the wind picks up, and the skipper shuts off the boat's engine and sails until 1200 hours (noon), covering 22 miles. At this time the skipper decides to use both power and sail to make more progress. The boat arrives in port at 1800 hours (6 p.m.) after covering a total of 64 miles. If the speed under power and sail equals the speed under power plus the speed under sail, how fast did the boat travel under power, under sail, and under both power and sail?

We know that from 0800 hours to 1200 hours the boat was traveling under sail power and it covered 22 miles. So the speed of sail power = 22 / 4 = 5.5 mph

Let E represent the speed of the boat with only Engine power and S represent the speed of the boat with only Sail power.
So now we have:
2E + 22 + 6 (E + S) = 64
2E + 22 + 6 (E + 5.5) = 64
2E + 22 + 6E+ 33 = 64
2E + 6E = 64 - 22 - 33
8E = 9
E = 11/8
E = 1.125 mph

E+S = 1.125 + 5.5 = 6.625 mph

Let's double check the answers
2(1.125) + 4(5.5) + 6(6.625)
= 2.25 + 22 + 39.75
= 64

I have been given an oppertunity to buy a 22 ft 1990 master craft tri mark with a 351 in great condition. It has completly redone interior, wakeboard tower, new pine sterio and speakers. Brand new custom snap on cover that cost 1000. The boat is damn neer show room quality. motor runs great says to run 45 to 55 mph. I have no idea how to look this up or even if its a good buy. I have the oppertunity to buy it for 12. Help me make my decision. Thank you

$12,000? thats a bit high for a 20 year old boat. Nada Guides ( http://www.nadaguides.com/default.aspx?L I=1-24-38-5697-0-0-0&l=1&w=24&am p;p=38&f=5698&m=11128&d=1600 115938&y=1990&ml=M&gc=MR& ;gtc=MR )suggests a resale of between $6-7000, but i am not sure if i looked at the right model, there are 2 22 footers, and pricing the accessories is a bit tricky. Nada is also notoriously inaccurate in their pricing. Check these sites for comparable boats:

Stay away from places like Ebay and Kijiji, and as always, drive it before you buy it. If you are willing to spend that kind of money, spend $250 and have an inspection (not a survey) performed by a good shop, preferrably a dealer.

I need a novel cover made from my novel. I know theres a lot of creative pple with talent out there!! the reason i say movie/novel is because i was hoping that the cover would look similar to a movie cover with all the main characters on it. The novel is called : Beyond the Ripples. its a romance/drama/thriller
anywhooo i appriciate it very much :)

character descriptions:

the main main characters:
Jamison: male ages 18-22 (is 19 in the book). tall lean muscles bright blue eyes, dark messy hair (brown or black idc, w/e looks good and not too long but not short short). very chiseled jawlineand high cheek bones. oliveish complextion but more french colored. he needs a certain victorian look like hes born in 1824 (crucial).
Ariel: female ages 17-20 (is 18 in the book). 5'7''-5'9''. slim but curvy not paris hilton slim but marilyin monroe curvy. long rich chocolate hair. preferably in curls or waves down to her waist. emerald green eyes that stand out (crucial)!! full lips but not angelina jolie. thick lashes. sophisticated style, she was born with money. (preferably if she was in a red dress) not pale skinned but creamy peach, american.

anastasia: female ages 26-29 (28 in the book). long wavy red hair, strawberry blonde. brown or green eyes idc, w/e looks good. average build with more hips and hooters cuz she has a kid. pale skin.

Gabriel: (yay finally the bad guy) male ages 24-29 (25 in the book). average build , thin face but good looking. hazel or brown eyes. blonde or dirty blond hair. needs to have that certain villainy that can look either 1824 or 2009... challenge hehe

Henry: male ages 26-33 (30 in the book) (brothers with jamison and married to anastasia if that helps) dark hair like jamison but greyish green eyes (crucial) and a sharp nose. he needs to look youngish but you can tell hes in his 30's or close to it. hes from 1824 as well.

Rosa: (the bad girl yay!!) female ages 17-21(18 in the book). latino background. brown hair, brown eyes. not very pretty but not ugly. smuggish looking nose. slender build, the closest resemblence i had in mind was vanessa hudgens. she is from 1824 but can look 2009 as well.

kool and the background picture theme is a ripple in water or an old victorian house (garden setting by the water) or an old row boat. NOTE i said theme!! so that means anything along those lines so be open minded

here are the relations: jamison and ariel are lovers. anastasia and henry are husband/wife with a kid( they love ea/other a lot). gabriel is the male villain and rosa is the female villain. i hope that helped with arrangments and stuff

i dont have the money for professional designers and by 'my professionals' i meant my novel agent. i wanted to bring a different prospective to my book by my possible audiences not all professional and not to my point.

You've got to be kidding. If you're at all professional you'll know that graphic designers and artists get paid quite a lot of money for that work. To not only ask someone to do it for free, but to ask them to make several mock ups is just rude.
If you want help with something it's ok to ask but don't do it under false pretenses. "my professionals" indeed.

Ps: i wont hire professionals to do it because i want to know what my poossible audiences are into. these new ideas would help me figure out what to add to my novel and what is possible. my agent would be thrilled as well. thanks :)
