18 Boat Cover

I have an 10 year old canvas cover on my 18" boat. It was nice when I purchased it but the uv and wear & tear has compromised the cover. Now it leaks like a sieve and I need to fix it or replace it. Is there a product I can spray or paint on the cover to make it waterproof again?

I would like to put a tight cover on an 18 foot boat and trailer it 26 hours at 70 mph. What kind of cover should I use.

If you read the fine print, most boat/mooring covers say they are not intended for use while trailering. However, if the cover is well made and has good support and is well secured, I've pulled boats 50-100 miles with no damage. Lighter covers well not take the winds you are suggesting. I'd think about shrink rapping like the factory does when shipping. And, I'd slowdown to 55 or so. You'll save fuel and reduce the stress on boat and trailer. Good Luck!

I have a 1987 Bayliner Capri Cuddy, 18 ft. It came with the original canvas snap boat cover, however it has become too small due to sun. Is there another type of cover more of just a slip cover that I can keep on it all summer while it is docked in the water? Does anyone have any websites or suggestions?

Well if the current cover isn't torn or worn out I can probably save you a couple of hundred dollars. First, soak the cover in a tub of fresh water to rinse the salt out of it. Next, stretch the cover to reach the bow and aft snaps and attach them. Now start working your way down both sides toward the middle of the boat. You should be able to restretch the canvas to fit the boat if you wet it first.

If you do need to buy another cover you're looking for someone who works with canvas to make boat covers, awnings, etc. Sometimes a sail maker might make them as well as a part of a side line.

I also found a link to an owners club which led me to a good shop specializing in Bayliner covers. I'll leave those links below.

I would still recommend that you try to restretch the original covers first though. It's really not all that hard and new covers are going to be expensive. Besides that all that's going to happen to your new cover is it will get wet and shrink the same way that this one did. What will you do buy a new cover every time one shrinks?

It is available in assorted thicknesses and colors: Blue, Green and Silver.
It has a rope reinforced hem and heat sealed seams and grommets every 3 feet
It is sun and fade resistant and rot & rust proof

Would an ordinary waterproof cover be enough or should it be more elaborately contructed for snow/ice runoff?
Suggestions appreciated.

covered storage, tarps or covers wouldn't hold up, even a carport would work if you put a boat cover on the boat

Baja Islander 18' nice boat but would like to 'refresh' paint/decals.Need to wetsand and polish,rubbing compound? Not sure!
Also cover is faded,can you run the cover thru large industrial washing machie with dye?

Before you wetsand try 3M fiberglass restorer wax. Its made to bring faded finishes back. If that does not do it then wetsand, polish.
If the cover is in good shape and just needs treating, you could get a few cans of Fabric Guard that will water-proof it again or send it to Sunbrella Industries for a complete treatment to freshen it up.
