I’m running a Nitro 175 Fish & Ski outfitted with the Mercury 125hp ELPTO. I have decided that I want replace the aluminum prop (12 ¾ X 21) with a SS prop. At present my RPM’s and aluminum prop are perfectly match. Max RPM rating for this engine is 5250. At WOT I’m running 5250 at 53 MPH. Being that my RPM’s and pitch are matched would I stick with a 21” SS prop? Can you recommend a decent SS prop manufacture?
Kevin M.
Because of it's shinier surface and therefore less friction you'll get a bit more slippage with the SS prop than with the aluminum one, but usually not enough to worry about. The blade design can make as much or more difference anyway.
A 21" or 22" pitch will be fine to keep the same speed range you have now if it actually suits the boat the same as your current prop does.
No two props are the same. Different designs having the same diameter and pitch give different performances with the same boat, so you'll need to specify some details about the hull, the weight, the kind of water conditions you're mostly on, the design of your current prop, etc.
A similar design of prop but in SS may be heavier and therefore load the engine more. With a thin-bladed prop it might be lighter. Steel can make thinner props than aluminum can.
There are so many factors it really isn't possible to directly transfer one set of performance figures for your boat to another prop just by book specs. You can get somewhere close but trial is the only way to get a really truthful set of figures.

I've heard mixed reviews about Bayliner boats. Looking at a 2007-2008 Bayliner 175 or 185 runabout or ski/fish. For around 13,600 new for the 175, it seems like a great deal!
So what is the truth? Is Bayliner really the bottom of the quality list? What makes a new Bayliner so much cheaper than any other boat?
If you only have that much money to spend, then go for it. But if you can spend more stay away from Bayliner. Although Bayliner is made by Brunswick Corp. there is a reason they sell for this price. Take a look at Brunswick's website. Check out the other boat brands they manufacture and find boats comparable to the Bayliner you are considering. There will be a big price difference.
The reason for this is that Bayliner is simply made with cheaper materials. The carpet is the equivalent of cardboard, the hull is extremely thin and the vinyl is cheap.
Brunswick also makes Maxum, Triton, Baja and Lund boats, all of which are extremely well made boats. Just check out the price difference, and go to a dealer and look at the other Brunswick brands of boats. YOU WILL SEE FOR YOURSELF!
Oh yeah, one more thing. Unless it has an older OMC Johnson or evinrude outboard or a new Evinrude E-Tec outboard, which I guarantee it does not due to the fact that Brunswick also owns the Mercury Marine brand, it does not come with a V4 engine. There is no such thing as a V4 Mercury outboard or ANY V4 sterndrive motor.

When buying a 17-20 foot bowrider ski and fish type boat such as the glastron SX-175 FS, is it better to go with an inboard/outboard (sterndrive) or an outboard? What makes either one the better option?
Does anyone have suggestions... Outboard or I/O???
LET US DO A COMPARISION
GOOD WEIGHT I/O weigh more so the ride is much better than with an outboard. Also if skiing is an issue the I/O is a more stable platform
BAD WEIGHT I/O weight more so it takes a bit more tow vehicle and a bit more gas and a bit more trailer to haul one around.
FUEL ECONEMY The I/O is a more fuel efficient motor. It is basically a car engine. It's torque is delivered at lower RPM's than an outboard, although the new four-strokes are very good.
COST The cost of the I/O is a bit more than the cost of a 2 cycle outboard, 4 cycles cost are about equal to I/O's. Resale value is much better for an I/O.
MAINTENANCE Routine maintenance on I/O's are a little more trouble than for outboards. 2 cycles don't need much maintenance and 4 cycles are about the same as I/O's
NOISE I/O's are less noisy than even 4 cycles with 2
cycles much more noisy.
The choice is what is more important to you. If I was going boat riding and skiing I would go with the I/O. If I was going fishing and going alot I would go with the outboard

And does anyone believe that taxes won't go up no matter who wins? Bear with me please. Ilive in a $175,000 house (at least it used to be worth that) We drive a10 and a15 year old car bought with cash, have a 33 year old fishing boat, bought with cash. I pay My taxes and manage our household budget responsibly. I don't want that money going to stop a forclosure on someone living in a half million dollar home with a Vette a Bmer 2 jet skis and a Harley who can't afford the toys He chose to buy.(I don't think the bailout/giveaway accounts for that scenerio, and there will be plenty of them) Shouldn't they just have to find a way to pay for the mess they got into?
And why has President Bush set the worst example possible by borrowing a trillion dollars from foriegn countries without any real way or plan to pay it back?
That's worse than raising taxes because it adds interest to the mix. I've heard that we pay over $20 bil a year in interest alone just to China. (not sure how accurate that is, but we obviously will be paying them interest that should be going to our Govt.) Lots of people from all walks of life have gone into debt for more than they can handle including and especially President Bush.
Obama will have to raise taxes more than He's admitting and not just on the rich, and for McCain to keep pretending that He won't have to raise taxes at all would be laughable if it weren't so sickening.
We're stuck bailing out Bush's mess with higher taxes no matter who wins, but why do we have to bail out irresponsible homeowners and rich wall street crooks?
Sorry wrong category. Can anyone help me figure out how to change to politics?
Bailouts definitely stink when you're trying to go for it in two. Be a man, go for the green, and if you realize you're in the wrong category, don't waste your time typing up a long drawn out email. Nobody's going to respond with a serious response. The bailout will work in the long run and it's really the only option at this point. Not voting it in will cost us middle class folk more $$$ in the long run. Rates will temporarily rise, but in the coming months with more bad news on the horizon in the market, mortgage rates will drop.
